Abstract
The American Women's Hospitals (AWH) developed from the War Service Committee of the Medical Women's National Association (later, American Medical Women's Association (AMWA)) in 1917 to provide, register and finance American women physicians for war work; offer medical and emergency relief to refugees; and, later, to provide international public health service. The AWH photographs were frequently used in fundraising and publicity campaigns. This group of photographs show the efforts of the AWH in present day Serbia and Macedonia (then Yugoslavia). The bulk of the photographs are from the early 1920s and depicts several hospitals across Serbia/Macedonia, including the AWH hospitals at Veles and Skopje, and an AWH hospital in Monastir, Serbia (run in tandem with the American Red Cross). There are many photographs of hospital staff, patients, various programs such as clothing distributions done for the local populace and exterior shots of the hospitals, including the construction of Skopje Hospital.
