Background note

During the lead-up to its fiftieth anniversary in 1941, Drexel Institute commissioned two professors in its English Department, Edward D. McDonald and Edward M. Hinton, to write a history of the institute, which was published by Drexel in 1942. A quarter-century later, Drexel asked Hinton, joined this time by his wife, Margaret S. Hinton, to revise and update the history for publication in conjunction with the institute's seventy-fifth anniversary in 1966. They completed a full-length manuscript but apparerently the work was never published.

Scope and content note

This collection contains materials related to two histories of Drexel Institute: Edward D. McDonald and Edward M. Hinton, "Drexel Institute of Technology 1891-1941: A memorial history," which was published in 1942; and Edward D. McDonald, Edward M. Hinton, and Margaret S. Hinton, "Drexel Institute of Technology 1891-1966: A Philadelphia story," which apparently was never published. Included are a set of source cards compiled for use in writing the 1942 history, three copies of the typescript for the 1966 history (which differ in small details), a sample chapter on student health from the 1966 history, and correspondence. The collection was assembled by University Archives staff.
