Administrative History

The Beaver Coal Corporation (later Beaver Coal Company, Limited) was co-founded by Anthony J. Drexel, Logan Bullitt, and J.P. Morgan sometime after 1889. It owned land in Raleigh County, West Virginia. Under lease agreements with Beaver Coal, other companies mined coal and cut timber on this land. Later, the company also leased natural gas reserves and leased portions of its surface property for farming, commercial, and individual use. As of 2016, the company remains in existence as a limited partnership, and three of its six current directors are descendants of the founders.

Two of the Beaver Coal Corporation’s founders had worked together for many years before helping to form the new company. In 1871, Anthony J. Drexel and J. P. Morgan had formed a private merchant banking partnership in New York called Drexel, Morgan & Co. In 1895, after Anthony J. Drexel's death, J. P. Morgan assumed control of this firm and renamed it J.P. Morgan & Co.

Beaver Coal was formed as part of the 1890s real estate speculation in coal and timber lands. Through land agents, small holdings were bought up, consolidated, and sold to wealthy men to bring in capital for development. The coming of the railroad made it possible to move the natural resources. In 1888, J.P. Morgan and William K. Vanderbilt became majority owners of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The company became a major coal carrier, rebuilding its lines to modern standards and adding branches across southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky.
