| Abstract: | Engineers have long realized that corrugated webs enormously increase steel girdersâ stability against buckling and can result in very economical design. Recently, the new idea of combining the tubular flanges with corrugated webs brought new issues of research. The objective of the research presented in this thesis is to investigate the behavior of steel members with corrugated webs and tubular flanges subjected to shear, bending, and axial compression. Relative buckling modes are also discovered. The work includes testing of full-scale specimens and nonlinear finite element analyses, which includes the development of material and geometric finite element model, whose results are verified against the test results. At the same time, calculations are made to investigate their validity in analyzing this kind of members. The detailed stress distribution and buckling modes of the members subjected to different loading cases were studied. The effects of the geometric factors on the buckling behavior are also investigated. It was found that, within the parametric range studied in this thesis, the typical failure modes of the structural members with corrugated webs and tubular flanges are local shear buckling of the web panel, yielding of the tubular flange and local plate buckling of the flange. It was found that using Finite Element Analysis method and equations discussed in each chapter is an effective way to predict the failure load and failure mode of the steel members with corrugated webs and tubular flanges. |
