Abstract: This poster will describe research that investigated the collection of user-contributed annotations added to images posted by the Library of Congress on the website Flickr.com. The Library of Congress and other institutions are investigating using these annotations, submitted as comments and notes, for resource identification and cataloging. The purpose of the study was to identify the types of information being contributed to the Library’s resources by the public at large. Three distinct sets of images were analyzed; with over one third of the images receiving an annotation determined enhance access or identification. We created a classification of four annotation types to capture the intent of the contribution: personal and historical remembrances, links to additional resources, corrections and translations, and invitations to add the image to a group of similar images. We discuss the implications of these annotation types on their usefulness to the Library and its patrons, including: search, content description, and information retrieval. Additionally, the limits of “collections” are becoming blurred as connections are built with comment hyperlinks to related resources outside of the Library, such as Wikipedia pages. These terms are being indexed by general web search engines and are visible by default when a user visits the Library of Congress’ page on Flickr. Privacy, authority, and accessibility concerns are raised as the Library’s use of these annotations might be subject to specific federal policies or laws. Future research suggested by our study includes a comprehensive analysis o f cataloging schema for annotations, and developing methods that allow users to self-classify through the user-interface or other mechanisms.
