|Abstract: ||The current research describes the evolution of tidal embayments based on a 2D process based approach. The research differs from earlier research in the sense that a simple formulation of bank erosion is included.
Model results describe 800 years of evolution of a tidal embayment for tidal waves approaching the inlet both in perpendicular and parallel direction. Pattern formation takes place within the first decades and is responsible for the widening process. Longer timescales reveal a continuous deepening and widening of the bed profile. The model results correspond well with the relationship of Jarret (1976) describing the relation between tidal prism and the cross sectional area. A tide parallel to the shore leads to an asymmetric inlet cross-section that widens and erodes more at the bank where the tide comes from. This is in accordance with observations along the Dutch coast. However, no equilibrium was reached in terms of declining sediment transports and shear stresses. This is attributed to the widening process, which supplies initially a large amount of sediment to the embayment.
The approach shows a promise in describing process-based, long-term evolution of alluvial estuaries, including scenarios of sea level rise and land reclamation projects.|
