Abstract: In a dammed river, there is great concern regarding degradation of the riverbed downstream of the dam and sedimentation in the dam reservoir. To address these issues, it is necessary that we understand sediment behavior in the reservoir. Such behavior greatly depends on the flow characteristics. It is necessary that we build a model that can reproduce the flow characteristics within the dam reservoir. Since fiscal 2003, we have been continuously observing the flow characteristics in the Nibutani Dam reservoir (on the Saru River in Hokkaido, Japan) by ADCP (acoustic Doppler current profilometer) installed at the reservoir bed. We have been continuously observing sediment behavior in the same place, using an automatic turbidmeter. When an orifice gate is open, water in the bottom layer of the reservoir flows toward the dam body, regardless of the flood scale. Turbidity was found to increase with increases in flow velocity in the bottom layer of water. It is thought that when there is discharge from an orifice gate, even during small-scale flood, the discharge influences the behavior of sediment accumulated at the bottom of the reservoir.
