| Abstract: | Lake Kinneret is a large monomictic lake located in the Syrian-African Rift Valley in north-eastern
Israel. Water quality management within Lake Kinneret is of critical importance since it supplies
about half of Israel’s drinking water. Increasing pressures on the lake have necessitated the
development of a decision support system, based on field monitoring and numerical lake models, for
water quality prediction. To this end, numerous developments were made to the ecological model
CAEDYM in order to accurately simulate Lake Kinneret ecology, including sophisticated
zooplankton and bacterial sub-models. This paper summarizes the model and its development, the
model performance against a comprehensive multiple year dataset, and the use of the model as a
scientific tool to help explore nutrient cycling processes within the lake and how these are affected
by different management scenarios. Finally, an overview of the 3D real-time management system
that has been developed for Lake Kinneret is presented. |
| Description: | Paper presented at The Seventh International Conference on HydroScience and Engineering (ICHE) hosted by the College of Engineering at Drexel Univeristy on September 10-13, 2006 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The conference theme was IT in the Field of HydroSciences. It included several mini-symposia that emphasized IT topics in HydroSciences and the yearly meeting of the metadata group of the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange organization. |
