| Abstract: | Trees in the mountain regions are left in place without tree thinning due to economic restrictions.
Rapid tree thinning is needed, and we have to consider the effective use of such thinned woods. In
this research, the authors consider such uses for trees as thinning as a pile dike.
The Purposes for our research are to study how the flow is influenced by the pile dike from
thinning trees in the river, and to examine the habitat of fish in or near the pile dikeļ¼To complete the
research, experiments and numerical analyses were carried out. In experiments, velocity of flow and
water depth was measured, and the behavior of fresh water fish (Tribolodon hakonensis), a very
popular fish in the middle reaches of Japanese, was observed.
In our numerical analysis, the two-dimensional shallow water equation is used to examine the
profile of flow, is tics and the behavior of fish is computed by the random walk model, including
some characteristics of fish. As a result, the flow and the behavior of fish in the channel with pile
dike become clear. |
| Description: | Paper presented at The Seventh International Conference on HydroScience and Engineering (ICHE) hosted by the College of Engineering at Drexel Univeristy on September 10-13, 2006 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The conference theme was IT in the Field of HydroSciences. It included several mini-symposia that emphasized IT topics in HydroSciences and the yearly meeting of the metadata group of the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange organization. |
