Abstract: The Christian Church at Cogan Stations is a moderately sized congregation that is located ten miles northwest of Williamsport, PA. Situated on the side of a mountain, the church is located on a large terraced site with views of the surrounding mountainous terrain. The church has approached Quadra Engineering to design a new, multi-purpose facility for their growing congregation. Our team has proposed constructing a new fifty-five thousand square foot building adjacent to the existing church, and developing the site to increase the parking capacity to four hundred cars. The architectural scheme is highlighted by a twelve hundred-seat, radial style sanctuary located on the upper tier of the site, central atriums and a generously sized lobby. The structural system is a hybrid of steel and timber framing which utilizes a structural insulated panel curtain wall that will maximize the thermal efficiency of the envelope. A highly efficient heating and cooling plant will provide hot and chilled water for comfort applications, while the use of alternative energy sources are investigated for the building’s power requirements. Green considerations such as rainwater recycling, on-site waste treatment and storm water runoff management are also incorporated into the project. The project’s estimated budget is $7.0 million, which results in a $125 / square foot cost. In order to provide time for raising the money, the construction will be divided into three phases. Upon completion, the new building will be a state of the art facility that will provide religious, educational, and community services to the Williamsport region.
